10 Signs of a Christian – 9.  Hope

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  (John 14:1-6)

Learn it:

When Jesus is talking with his disciples before he was arrested, he talked about God’s plan of salvation.  They were having a hard time understanding what was going to happen with Jesus’ life.  In the passage above Jesus was trying to encourage them and give them hope!  He wanted his disciples to trust him that God is preparing a place for them.  He then goes on to explain that he, Jesus, is going to be going away but that he will come back for them.  Jesus then affirms that the disciples should know where he is going and what he is talking about.

Thomas is the one disciple who speaks up and shares that he is confused and does not know where Jesus is going.  Jesus then responds by saying, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  He is the way to eternal life.  Everything he has been teaching them and showing them should help them know the way.  He is the hope in their lives.

Live it:

Jesus the Christ is the hope of the whole world.  When we read through that passage above, we can relate with Thomas because Jesus’ teachings can be confusing.  Yet the gospel is a very simple message.  God sent his Son to pay the price that we deserve for our sins.  If we confess that Jesus is our Savior and surrender our lives to him, then we will have eternal life.  This is where we put our hope.  We should not be discouraged by what we see in the world but have hope in what God is doing and will do in the future.
